Film Synopsis
EDFNZ: Seven Rivers Walking (E)
In Seven Rivers Walking / Haere Maaririe, filmmakers Gaylene Barnes and Kathleen Gallagher travel alongside seventy kaitiaki – fishermen, local iwi, farmers, artists, rafters, scientists, trampers – as they walk, raft and cycle seven of Canterbury's rivers over seven weeks to Easter 2017. Rivers are whole living eco-systems - we see fish, birds, drylands and wetlands. Many are surviving only in pockets.
SGFF - Spirited Away - Japanese Version (PG)
From the legendary Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki (Princess Mononoke), this Academy Award winner (Best Animated Film) follows the fanciful adventures of a ten-year-old girl named Chihiro
EDFNZ: No.9 The Mighty Midget (M)
No.9 is the often amusing and quirky story of Gordon McIsaac’s lifetime passion for a midget racing car. Midget No.9 was built in Alameda, California in 1935, but arrived in New Zealand in 1937, and that Christmas Day, made history by winning the inaugural race at Auckland’s Western Springs Speedway.
EDFNZ: Water Whispers Tangaroa (E)
The refreshingly optimistic environmental documentary explores the healing and recovery of polluted and fished out water ways, and the conservation of vibrant water ways - from Mountain Lakes, through rivers and out into the ocean. Subtle, sensitive and beautifully photographed it is a quietly convincing voice amid the clamour. People from very different backgrounds stand together – real about the challenges they face, they show us there are solutions as well as problems.
EDFNZ: Will It Fly? (E)
New Zealand’s greatest historical aviation mystery is that of Richard Pearse and his early 1900’s flying machine. There were many eyewitness accounts that say they saw Pearse flying his aircraft as ealy as 1903. 110 years on, Ivan Mudrovich a retired automotive engineer has embarked on an epic journey, following the footsteps of Pearse, to rebuild his aircraft and to fly it.
Slipknot: Day of the Gusano (TBC)
"Day of the Gusano” documents not only a historic performance from one of the most exciting live bands on the planet, but delves deeply into the lives of the band’s fans as well. This highly anticipated show gives a window into the chaos, excitement and community Slipknot has cultivated over the past 20+ years.
EDFNZ: Changing Gear (E)
A documentary that follows the women (aged between 45 and 72) during their two-month marathon cycle trip across canyons, deserts and rivers. This story is about a journey of self-discovery and cultural transmission from one generation to another and in this case, three generations of Rotumans. It’s about the discovery of culture, family, identity and belonging, the very things that define us as humans
EDFNZ: Monterey (E)
If it was your family business facing ruin, would you let your head or your heart rule? If the only way to keep your dream alive meant destroying the tight-knit, loving unit you’d created, would you? Monterey follows Paul and his partner Mira as they launch their Auckland café Monterey, hiring three young Samoan boys with no kitchen training and teaching them everything they know about hospitality.

Sophie, an average teenage girl working in a hat shop, finds her life thrown into turmoil when she is literally swept off her feet by a handsome but mysterious wizard named Howl. After this chance meeting she is turned into a 90-year old woman by the vain and conniving Witch of the Waste. Embarking on an incredible adventure to lift the curse, she finds refuge in Howl's magical moving castle where she becomes acquainted with Markl, Howl's apprentice, and a hot-headed fire demon named Calcifer.

Now they must find a way to reunite.

Adopted into the elderly couple’s care, she goes into a full-sized baby within an instant, leading to a life lived with little riches but ultimate tranquillity. But when she grows older, the interests of the wealthy intervene…
SGFF - My Neighbor Totoro - Japanese Version (G)
Two young girls, Satsuki and Mei, have moved with their father into a new home in the country, while their mother recovers from illness in a nearby hospital. When trouble occurs, their new friends will help them rediscover hope.
